Cambium is seeking a Senior Engineer with carbon-carbon experience to join our growing team in El Segundo, CA. The successful candidate will be curious with a desire to learn, have a strong desire to help grow a company, and will help us build a work culture of open-mindedness that embraces creativity. THE ROLE

Cambium is seeking a highly skilled Senior Engineer with expertise in carbon-carbon composites for thermal protection systems in the aerospace and defense industry. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of material properties, manufacturing processes, and applications related to carbon-carbon composites, particularly in the context of thermal protection for spacecraft, missiles, and defense systems. This will be a hands-on role and you will be involved in every step of the development process. As Cambium experiences rapid growth, the responsibilities of this role are expected to evolve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and optimization of carbon-carbon composite materials and structures for applications such as thermal protection systems
  • Conduct research and analysis to enhance material properties, including thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, and thermal stability
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate carbon-carbon composites into aerospace and defense systems, ensuring compatibility with overall design requirements
  • Oversee manufacturing processes, including fabrication, testing, and quality assurance, to ensure the production of high-performance thermal protection components
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing within the organization
  • Stay updated on advancements in carbon-carbon composite technology and industry trends, applying insights to improve product performance and innovation
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including management, clients, and suppliers, to convey project updates, challenges, and solutions

Key Requirements

  • You must have a strong desire to mentor other engineers and be willing to work in a hands-on engineering role
  • Due to the nature of the work, you must have US citizenship or US permanent residency
  • (M.S. / Ph.D.) in materials science, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related subject
  • (10+ / 6+) years of aerospace or defense industry experience
  • (5+ / 3+) years in carbon-carbon composites research, development, and application, with a preferred focus on thermal protection systems for aerospace and defense
  • Proficiency in analytical tools for characterization of materials structure-property relationships and performance
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes for carbon-carbon composites, such as chemical vapor deposition, densification, and machining
  • Experience with industry standards and regulations related to aerospace and defense materials, including MIL-STD and ASTM
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and address technical challenges in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to present complex technical concepts to diverse audiences

Salary Range: $135,000-$170,000
