Materials Engineer/Chemist I, Physical Properties

Principal Responsibilities

Cambium is seeking a Materials Engineer/Chemist I – Physical Properties to join our materials R&D team. You’ll work closely with our team to evaluate thermosetting resin monomers and formulations. This will be a hands-on role and you’ll gain experience working with synthetic chemists, materials scientists, and composites engineers. As Cambium experiences rapid growth, the responsibilities of this role are expected to evolve.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate analysis equipment such as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), and Rheometer to assess material properties. Perform physical characterization tests, measuring viscosity, modulus, and phase transitions of thermosetting resins and other materials.
  • Be responsible for maintenance of instruments including communication with instrument vendors.
  • Maintain excellent organization of data generated.
  • Provide regular updates to senior engineers with clear and open communication.
  • Prioritize safety and OSHA, EPA, and local health and safety requirements.
  • Create and contribute to the product demonstration and engineering teams in a manner consistent with Cambium’s mission and values and the growth of Cambium’s business.

Key Requirements

  • B.S. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics
  • Experience in a laboratory setting is required
  • 0-5 years work experience
  • Coursework related to basic polymer properties
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to complete tasks on time with little supervision
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience measuring physical properties of polymers, especially thermosetting resins
  • Experience with DSC, TGA, rheometer, DMA
  • Background in thermosets and/or polymers, with hands-on experience
  • Coursework related to chemical reaction kinetics, viscoelasticity, phase transitions, statistical design of experiments (DoE)

Salary: $90,000-$125,000
